Luke Ellis, an exceptionally intelligent boy, is abducted from his suburban Minneapolis home and taken to a windowless compound known as the Institute. There he joins children whose telepathic or telekinetic abilities have made them targets of an organization determined to extract and use their powers. Staff members enforce obedience with calculated rewards, humiliation, and severe punishment, while children who complete one stage of testing disappear into the ominous Back Half. As Luke learns the institution's routines and forms bonds with fellow captives, he begins searching for a way out of a place said to be inescapable. The novel combines institutional horror and paranormal suspense with a struggle over whether solidarity can withstand systematic cruelty.
