Description

Lyra Belacqua, an orphaned ward among the scholars of Oxford’s Jordan College, grows up in a world where every person has a daemon, an animal companion reflecting the inner self. Her life changes when Lord Asriel presents evidence linking the mysterious Dust to danger in the far North and to a city suspended in the Northern Lights. After Lyra is placed with the enigmatic Mrs. Coulter, her friend Roger is kidnapped, joining other missing children subjected to experiments that sever humans from their daemons. Carrying a compasslike device that reveals truth, Lyra travels north to find him. Her rescue mission opens into a struggle over knowledge, authority, and other universes in which the adults closest to her may be implicated in the threat.
