In Tuscany, Geppetto carves a marionette from an enchanted piece of wood and discovers that Pinocchio is already alive, willful, and eager to escape restraint. The puppet runs into town, becomes separated from his maker, and ignores repeated warnings about laziness and disobedience. Although he promises to attend school, he promptly trades his schoolbook for admission to a puppet theatre, where an encounter with the fearsome puppet master places him in danger. This pattern drives his adventures: good intentions give way to temptation, and every shortcut produces a new predicament. Comic, strange, and often severe, the children’s fantasy follows Pinocchio’s uneven education in responsibility as he pursues his wish to become a real boy.
