Description

Thomas Pynchon’s Gravity’s Rainbow is set mainly in Europe near the end of World War II, with the German military’s design, production, and deployment of V-2 rockets forming its central historical machinery. Within that setting, several characters pursue a mysterious black device intended for installation in a uniquely numbered rocket, 00000. The novel’s action therefore joins the wartime rocket program to a focused search whose object and purpose remain enigmatic. Readers encounter a story organized around military technology, competing pursuers, and the unsettling significance attached to a single rocket and the device meant to be placed inside it.
