Eric Packer, a twenty-eight-year-old billionaire asset manager, sets out across midtown Manhattan in a limousine because he wants a haircut. The seemingly simple trip becomes a contemporary odyssey as a presidential motorcade, an anticapitalist riot, and a musician’s funeral repeatedly obstruct his route. Experts in security, technology, currency, finance, and theory enter the car while Packer wagers catastrophically against the yen, losing immense sums belonging to his clients. Outside his mobile office, two threatening figures pursue him, one armed with a pastry rather than a conventional weapon. As the city’s disruptions penetrate Packer’s insulated world, Don DeLillo compresses money, technology, privilege, and physical danger into a single destabilizing day, exposing the volatility beneath fantasies of perfect control.
