A struggling American writer wanders through late-1920s and early-1930s Paris after separating from his wife. Among bohemians, transient companions, and sexual partners, he endures hunger, homelessness, filthy rooms, loneliness, and despair while trying to sustain the freedom he associates with art. The narrative refuses a tidy progression, moving through memory, present experience, stream-of-consciousness reflection, and fictionalized autobiography. Candid accounts of sex share space with ecstatic observation, bitterness, and meditations on poverty, creativity, and mortality. Rather than organizing hardship into a conventional story of advancement, the novel immerses the reader in a mind resisting social and literary restraint. Paris becomes both material environment and psychic landscape, a place where degradation, desire, alienation, and artistic defiance continually collide.
