Five centuries after the Foundation’s establishment, council member Golan Trevize publicly suspects that the supposedly vanished Second Foundation still directs galactic events. Mayor Harla Branno sends him away aboard an advanced gravitic ship to search for it, pairing him with historian Janov Pelorat, who hopes to locate humanity’s legendary homeworld, Earth. Meanwhile, the Second Foundation confronts evidence that an unknown power is manipulating the Seldon Plan and dispatches its own agents after Trevize. The competing searches converge on clues leading toward Gaia, a world whose living and nonliving matter shares a consciousness. Blending interstellar pursuit with arguments about history and collective power, the novel asks who should guide civilization when every apparent guardian may itself be controlled.
