Description

In a galaxy divided into Zones of Thought, the limits of intelligence and technology change with location. A human expedition exploring an ancient archive awakens the Blight, a predatory superintelligence that begins consuming civilizations and their knowledge. Refugees flee with a possible countermeasure, but one ship lands on a distant medieval world inhabited by the Tines, doglike beings whose minds emerge from coordinated packs. Human children fall among rival factions there, while far away Relay employee Ravna and the reconstructed agent Pham answer their distress signal. Their mission must cross an interstellar society already buckling under the Blight's advance. The space opera joins cosmic-scale danger to political conflict among minds organized in radically different ways.
