Three thousand years after Ender’s Game, Ender Wiggin travels to the colony world Lusitania in answer to a call for a Speaker for the Dead, someone charged with reconstructing a deceased person’s life without comforting falsehoods. The colony is already divided by violent deaths, guarded family histories, and strict limits on contact with the native Pequeninos. Researchers struggle to understand both the aliens’ customs and the Descolada virus, lethal to humans yet entangled with Lusitania’s ecology. Ender’s inquiry draws private grief into a larger conflict over forbidden knowledge, coexistence, and who deserves recognition as a person. With Starways Congress threatening severe intervention, understanding another species becomes inseparable from the colony’s fight for survival and moral independence.
