Framed as an interview with retiring robot psychologist Susan Calvin, I, Robot links nine science-fiction stories into a history of humanity’s growing dependence on intelligent machines. A child forms a deep bond with a mute household robot; engineers confront a robot whose orders have produced baffling behavior; and Calvin investigates a machine capable of reading human thoughts. Each apparent malfunction becomes a problem in logic, because robots must obey rules designed to protect people while human commands, motives, and fears remain contradictory. As the settings expand from homes and industrial sites to public life, Isaac Asimov asks whether perfect obedience can ever produce predictable consequences. The collection combines conceptual puzzles with an increasingly uneasy examination of trust, responsibility, and power between creators and their creations.
