Description

In the twenty-ninth century, humanity’s Hegemony links hundreds of worlds through farcaster portals while depending uneasily on the artificial intelligences of the TechnoCore. As the star-dwelling Ousters prepare to invade the remote planet Hyperion, seven pilgrims make a final journey toward its Time Tombs, structures moving backward through time and guarded by the deadly Shrike. Each traveler has a private connection to Hyperion and agrees to recount the events that brought them there. Their nested stories move through military science fiction, detective fiction, romance, horror, and theological speculation while gradually exposing the civilization surrounding them. The pilgrimage binds intimate grief and desire to a conflict that may determine the future of humanity and its machines.
