Earth detective Elijah Baley travels to the remote planet Solaria to investigate its first murder in two centuries and assess whether the society poses a strategic threat. His partner is the humanoid robot R. Daneel Olivaw, but the deeper obstacle is Solaria itself: only twenty thousand humans inhabit vast estates while robots perform nearly every task, and citizens regard face-to-face contact with intense disgust. The murdered scientist’s wife, Gladia, appears to be the obvious suspect, yet her memory is unreliable and the sole witness is a damaged household robot. As another poisoning raises the danger, Baley must solve a locked social puzzle in which isolation, technology, and custom determine what witnesses can perceive—and what crimes seem possible.
