Charlie Bucket lives with his parents and grandparents in deep poverty in a town overshadowed by Willy Wonka’s famous chocolate factory. The gates have long remained closed to outsiders after rival confectioners tried to steal Wonka’s recipes, but a new contest promises five children entry: each Golden Ticket brings a factory tour and a lifetime supply of chocolate. As the world scrambles to find them and the Buckets’ circumstances worsen, Charlie discovers the final ticket. Inside, he encounters a fantastical industry of improbable sweets and mysterious Oompa-Loompa workers. The novel contrasts hunger and abundance, secrecy and spectacle, while following a kind child through a comic world where extreme poverty collides with limitless invention.
