Tom Sawyer is an orphan growing up with Aunt Polly in the Mississippi River town of St. Petersburg, where school, chores, and respectable behavior compete poorly with his appetite for adventure. He turns punishment into profit by persuading other children to paint a fence for him, pursues a turbulent childhood romance with Becky Thatcher, and runs away with Huckleberry Finn and Joe Harper to play at being pirates. The games become dangerous when Tom and Huck witness a graveyard murder and must decide what to do with a secret that could put them at risk. Mixing comic mischief with sudden menace, the novel views small-town customs, friendship, fear, and moral courage through a boy’s talent for transforming ordinary life into theater.
