Washington homicide detective and forensic psychiatrist Alex Cross is called to San Francisco after murders there appear connected to an earlier case in Washington. The victims have disturbing injuries that suggest unusual forms of attack, leading Cross to pursue a possible tiger connection through zoos, veterinarians, and animal trainers. Inspector Jamilla Hughes joins him as the investigation develops. Despite similarities among the killings, Cross and Hughes must consider whether different perpetrators may be responsible. James Patterson builds the case around troubling physical evidence, an unconventional investigative trail, and the possibility that apparent connections between the murders may not point to a single culprit.
