Description

Chester’s Mill becomes a sealed world when an invisible dome drops around the Maine town, killing people at its boundary and cutting off every road and escape route. Former Army captain Dale Barbara, trapped before he can leave, is recruited by the government to locate the barrier’s power source. But the emergency also gives local politician Big Jim Rennie an opportunity to turn fear into authority. As Barbara, newspaper editor Julia Shumway, and uneasy allies investigate, Rennie tightens his control and the town’s injuries, divisions, and dwindling options compound. Told across many viewpoints, the novel combines an impossible disaster with a struggle over who governs when ordinary institutions can no longer reach the people inside.
