During a snowstorm, a heavily disguised stranger arrives at an inn in the English village of Iping. He demands privacy, conducts laboratory work behind a locked door, and provokes mounting suspicion as his money dwindles and an unexplained burglary troubles the village. The stranger is Griffin, a scientist whose optical experiments have made him invisible but left him unable to reverse the process. When exposure threatens, he reveals his condition and escapes the police, then coerces a tramp into helping recover the notebooks that preserve his research. Griffin increasingly treats invisibility not as a scientific crisis but as a weapon. The novel turns a speculative breakthrough into a dark study of isolation, lawlessness, and the destructive ambition to wield power without being seen.
