In a violent, economically collapsing United States of 2025, unemployed Ben Richards cannot afford medicine for his sick daughter while his wife supports the family through prostitution. He applies to a government-linked television network and is selected for The Running Man, a game show that brands contestants enemies of the state and gives them twelve hours before elite assassins begin hunting them. Richards earns money for every day he survives and must transmit two video messages daily, but viewers can collect rewards by reporting him. As he moves through impoverished cities, he discovers evidence of pollution and inequality that the network suppresses. The novel turns his televised flight into a grim contest between individual survival and an entertainment system built on surveillance, desperation, and public complicity.
