In Narnia, the ape Shift dresses the bewildered donkey Puzzle as Aslan and uses the false appearance to issue commands in the lion’s name. The fraud enables exploitation, intimidation, and an alliance with hostile Calormene power while frightened Narnians struggle to distinguish obedience from faith. Warned of the danger, King Tirian and Jewel the Unicorn confront the new order too hastily and are captured. Tirian’s appeal for help brings Eustace Scrubb and Jill Pole back from Earth, and their rescue effort gathers a small resistance around the king. The concluding Narnian chronicle combines siege and quest with an increasingly grave examination of deception, loyalty, judgment, and what remains when a familiar world approaches its end.
