Philologist Elwin Ransom is abducted by Devine and Weston and carried to Malacandra, an alien planet where his captors intend to offer him as a sacrifice. Escaping after their arrival, he crosses a strange low-gravity landscape and gradually learns the language and customs of an intelligent native people. Their ordered world undermines his assumptions about civilization, while his captors reveal competing forms of human aggression: Devine wants Malacandra’s gold, and Weston imagines an expansionist empire consuming planets in the name of progress. Ransom eventually learns that Earth is regarded as a corrupted, isolated world. The novel turns planetary adventure into a critique of colonial exploitation, scientific arrogance, and humanity’s claim to moral supremacy.
