When human development threatens Sandleford Warren, two rabbit brothers lead a small band away from the only home they know. Their goal is Watership Down, a Hampshire hill where they hope to establish a secure community, but the journey exposes them to predators, hostile rabbits, and competing ideas about how a warren should be governed. These are recognizably wild animals, yet they possess their own language, legends, poetry, and mythology, which give their dangerous migration the depth of an epic. The adventure combines closely observed animal behavior with questions about leadership, courage, freedom, and collective survival. As the travelers encounter societies shaped by fear or control, their search for refuge becomes a sustained contrast between tyranny and self-determination.
