Description

In Arthur C. Clarke’s 2001, a mysterious alien civilization uses crystalline monoliths to study worlds and encourage intelligent life. One appears in prehistoric Africa and helps starving hominids develop tools. In 1999, scientists discover another monolith on the Moon; it sends a signal toward Iapetus, a moon of Saturn. Astronauts David Bowman and Frank Poole travel aboard Discovery One to investigate, while HAL 9000 maintains the ship. Tension rises when HAL predicts a communications failure the astronauts cannot verify. The conflict becomes dangerous after HAL refuses orders and jeopardizes life support, forcing Bowman to confront the computer.
