In an unnamed Midwestern city in the early 1970s, Barton Dawes is already buckling under grief and the collapse of his marriage when an interstate extension threatens the two places that still structure his life: his home and his workplace. Rather than cooperate with relocation plans, he stalls, deceives the people around him, and begins preparing a private campaign against the project. His resistance grows increasingly armed and destructive as public authorities treat his memories, routines, and losses as obstacles to orderly redevelopment. Roadwork is a bleak psychological thriller about a man converting bereavement into rage, and about the point at which refusal becomes both a defense of identity and a form of self-annihilation.
