Ficciones gathers stories in which books, ideas, and systems acquire the force of physical reality. An infinite library contains every possible arrangement of letters; a secret lottery extends chance into every part of public life; a garden becomes a model of branching time; and an invented encyclopedia begins to impose its imaginary world upon the real one. Borges often presents these impossibilities through reviews, scholarly notes, biographies, and detective narratives, lending metaphysical puzzles the dry authority of documented fact. Labyrinths recur as buildings, texts, conspiracies, memories, and structures of thought, while philosophy, ancestry, strategy, and secret societies link otherwise independent tales. The collection offers compressed encounters with worlds whose perfect intellectual order repeatedly exposes the limits of human knowledge and identity.
