Description

Psychologist Kris Kelvin arrives at a research station above Solaris, an ocean-covered planet whose extraterrestrial intelligence has resisted decades of study. The field of Solaristics has declined into observing and cataloguing the ocean's phenomena without grasping their meaning, while unauthorized high-energy experiments have produced unexpected, psychologically traumatic results. The ocean begins materializing physical figures based on the researchers' repressed memories. Kelvin encounters the likeness of his dead lover, and other scientists face embodied memories of their own. Although these manifestations expose the researchers' inner lives, Solaris remains inscrutable. The novel centers on the limits and ultimate futility of human efforts to communicate with this alien intelligence.
