Spanning twenty stories from four decades, this collection maps Jorge Luis Borges’s recurring fascination with labyrinths, doubles, unstable identities, and ideas that overwhelm ordinary life. In “The Aleph,” a man discovers a point in a Buenos Aires cellar that contains every place in the universe; “The Zahir” follows an ordinary coin that gradually consumes its owner’s attention. Elsewhere, detectives, dreamers, scholars, and impostors encounter puzzles in which memory, infinity, and perception become dangerous. An extended autobiographical essay, written for the volume, places the fiction beside Borges’s reflections on family, reading, literary formation, and his development as a writer. Together, the stories offer compact speculative narratives whose intellectual structures open into questions about reality and the self.
