Labyrinths brings together Jorge Luis Borges’s short fiction and essays, moving freely among invented worlds, books, memory, identity, time, and philosophical paradox. In one story, an encyclopedia describes a fabricated world whose ideas begin displacing reality; another imagines an infinite library containing every possible book; a third turns a wartime spy mission into a meditation on branching paths through time. The accompanying essays consider literary tradition, Kafka, Pascal, and the recurring problem of time, treating criticism itself as a field for speculation. Across both forms, Borges compresses immense conceptual structures into brief, exact pieces in which libraries become universes, arguments resemble fables, and apparently scholarly explanations open onto uncertainty about who creates reality and how it can be known.
