Orlando begins as an Elizabethan nobleman and poet, then proceeds through centuries of English life without aging in any ordinary way. Along the journey, Orlando encounters major figures from literary history and, after roughly a hundred years, changes sex and continues living as a woman. This freedom from conventional limits of time and sex allows Virginia Woolf to turn one improbable life into a playful, satirical history of English literature and society. Orlando’s shifting position exposes how clothing, custom, law, and literary fashion shape identity and opportunity. Comic, fantastical, and deliberately resistant to fixed categories, the novel explores gender and artistic ambition across a life expansive enough to outlast several cultural eras.
