Description

Yevgeny Zamyatin’s We is a dystopian novel set in a future One State, where spacecraft engineer D-503 lives in a city built of glass and designed for pervasive surveillance. Citizens wear uniforms, move in step, and use numbers instead of personal names. Strict logic, formulas, and equations govern both public life and individual behavior, making order a principle of everyday existence. Through this rationalized society, the novel considers what happens when political authority seeks to make human conduct measurable and visible. The setting also reflects, in part, Zamyatin’s experiences of revolution and industrial labor rationalization.
