Description

Flatland is a two-dimensional society populated by geometric figures and organized through rigid distinctions of shape, class, and gender. Its narrator, a respectable Square from the professional caste, explains this world’s customs before confronting realities that its geometry declares impossible. After struggling to persuade the monarch of one-dimensional Lineland that a second dimension exists, the Square meets a sphere who carries him into three-dimensional Spaceland. The revelation transforms his understanding, but it does not make his neighbors more receptive to ideas that threaten their social and intellectual order. When he returns and teaches the existence of a third dimension, authorities suppress and imprison him. Presented as his memoir, the novella combines mathematical speculation with social satire about hierarchy, dogma, and the limits imposed by habitual perception.
