Description

Toru Okada, an unemployed lawyer’s assistant, begins searching for his wife’s missing cat and soon finds the ordinary boundaries of his life giving way. Mysterious phone calls, the clairvoyant Malta Kano, and a teenage neighbor lead him toward an abandoned house and an empty well. The Kano sisters bring psychic consultations and troubling revelations, while a former soldier’s eerie wartime account connects private unease with older trauma. When Toru’s wife Kumiko disappears, his search turns inward as well as outward, carrying him through the city, his memories, and increasingly uncanny experiences. The novel moves between domestic estrangement, historical violence, sexuality, and mysticism, using dreamlike encounters to test whether buried forces can be understood or resisted.
