When the NSA’s powerful TRANSLTR system fails to break a code called Digital Fortress, commander Trevor Strathmore summons cryptographer Susan Fletcher to determine why. The code’s creator, former NSA employee Ensei Tankado, has threatened to expose the agency’s secret surveillance technology in protest against government intrusion into private life. Believing that a ring contains the key, Strathmore sends Susan’s fiancé, David Becker, to recover it in Seville. As the ring changes hands, a killer follows Becker, while Susan confronts suspicion, deception, and a hostage crisis inside the agency. The techno-thriller runs parallel chases through cryptographic systems and city streets, framing its national-security emergency around a conflict between institutional secrecy, personal trust, and the public’s right to privacy.
