In a fractured future America where corporations and private franchises have replaced much of civic government, Hiro Protagonist works two incompatible jobs: freelance hacker in the Metaverse and pizza deliverer for the Mafia. After teaming with Y.T., a young skateboard courier, he encounters Snow Crash, both an addictive street drug and a digital file capable of harming hackers. Research links the threat to ancient Sumerian culture, the Tower of Babel, a religious organization, and a powerful media magnate. Hiro and Y.T.’s intelligence-gathering partnership pulls them from virtual spaces toward the approaching Raft, a vast flotilla of refugees. Stephenson combines cyberpunk pursuit, linguistic speculation, and corporate satire in a story about information that can function as code, faith, commodity, and weapon.
