In Ayemenem, Kerala, twins Estha and Rahel experience a family crisis whose consequences continue shaping them into adulthood. Their British cousin’s visit gathers a divided household already burdened by resentment, colonial inheritance, and strict ideas about status. At the same time, their mother Ammu begins a forbidden relationship with Velutha, a family servant constrained by caste discrimination. The novel moves nonlinearly between 1969, when private desire collides with family and political authority, and 1993, when Rahel returns to reunite with an Estha rendered withdrawn and mute. Childlike perception, recurring images, and fractured chronology reveal consequences before fully explaining their causes. The family story examines how caste, gender, history, and social convention police who may be loved—and at what cost.
