Macon “Milkman” Dead III grows from childhood into an alienated young man within a Black family in Michigan, estranged from his home and especially from his acquisitive father. His unconventional aunt Pilate offers his first living connection to a family history shaped by violence, dispossession, and the murder of his grandfather by white men seeking his land. When rumors of an inheritance send Milkman south toward his ancestral home, a search motivated by money becomes an encounter with stories he never learned to hear. A children’s song about an enslaved ancestor gradually connects family names and memories to a wider history of flight and displacement. The novel joins a personal quest for identity to the myths, losses, and survival carried across generations.
