Sula Peace and Nel Wright grow up together in the Bottom, a Black Ohio neighborhood perched above the town of Medallion and eventually threatened with demolition for a golf course. Nel’s orderly, conventional household contrasts with Sula’s crowded, socially defiant family, yet the girls form an intense bond and share the discoveries and dangers of adolescence. A traumatic accident involving a neighborhood boy becomes their secret, binding friendship to guilt. As adults, Nel embraces marriage and community expectations while Sula leaves, then returns unwilling to accept the roles assigned to her. Their opposing choices turn intimacy into conflict and force the Bottom to define itself against Sula’s independence. Spanning decades, the novel joins personal betrayal, communal judgment, memory, and social change without reducing either woman to a moral example.
