Description

In a County Sligo secondary school, Connell is popular, academically gifted, and working-class; Marianne is wealthy, fiercely intelligent, and isolated by her classmates. Because Connell’s mother cleans Marianne’s family home, the two begin talking privately and discover a shared interest in literature and politics. Their sexual relationship remains secret at Connell’s insistence, culminating in a humiliation that separates them. At Trinity College Dublin, their social positions reverse: Marianne finds confidence and connection while Connell struggles with money and belonging. They repeatedly rebuild their bond without fully escaping old misunderstandings. Set during the post-2008 downturn, the novel follows their shifting friendship and desire through depression, grief, and emotional abuse, examining how class, shame, and failures of communication shape intimacy.
