Near midnight in Tokyo, Mari Asai settles into a Denny's with a book and no intention of going home. A chance meeting with musician Takahashi draws her into the orbit of a love hotel, where a Chinese woman has been assaulted and the night manager needs an interpreter. Their paths cross those of workers, criminals, and other sleepless people moving through the city's fluorescent margins. Elsewhere, Mari's beautiful sister Eri lies in an unnatural sleep as a television screen seems to open onto another room. A detached, cinematic viewpoint shifts among these encounters until ordinary loneliness and uncanny menace occupy the same hours, making the city before dawn feel both intimately connected and impossible to understand completely.
