About Haruki Murakami
Haruki Murakami is a Japanese writer whose fiction moves freely among literary realism, fantasy, science fiction, and crime. He published his first novel, Hear the Wind Sing, after seven years running a jazz bar, and music has remained part of his imaginative vocabulary, from the Beatles song that unlocks memory in Norwegian Wood to the classical references woven through The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. Murakami often uses first-person narration, spare surfaces, and characters whose ordinary routines open onto inexplicable events. Solitude, freedom, grief, and uncertain intimacy recur across his work, while novels such as Kafka on the Shore and 1Q84 place private dislocation beside parallel worlds, curses, cults, and other forms of the uncanny. His range extends beyond novels to short stories and nonfiction. Underground gathers testimony about the Tokyo subway sarin attack, while What I Talk About When I Talk About Running turns his experience as a long-distance runner into a reflection on the habits and stamina of writing.
