World War II veteran Hazel Motes returns to Tennessee and finds his family home abandoned, then continues to the fictional city of Taulkinham determined to reject the faith that has haunted him since childhood. Although he declares himself an atheist, strangers take him for a preacher, and every attempt to escape religion draws him deeper into theological argument. Encounters with young zookeeper Enoch Emery, a fraudulent evangelist, and the evangelist’s daughter help drive Hazel to found an anti-God street ministry preached from his battered car. When a local confidence man copies and commercializes the movement, Hazel’s private revolt becomes public spectacle. Grotesque comedy and religious satire shape a Southern Gothic struggle between disbelief, spiritual longing, and the impossibility of indifference.
