Description

On his fifteenth birthday, Kafka Tamura runs away from Tokyo to escape an ominous paternal curse and pursue the mystery of the mother and sister who abandoned him. He finds refuge at the Komura Memorial Library in Takamatsu, but police soon connect him to a murder he cannot determine whether he committed. In alternating chapters, Satoru Nakata—an older man left without memory or literacy after a childhood incident—uses his ability to speak with cats to find missing pets. A disturbing encounter drives Nakata from his familiar life, and a truck driver helps him travel toward Takamatsu. As their paths approach one another, music, dreams, memory, and supernatural events blur the boundaries between fate and choice, conscious experience and the hidden life of the mind.
