At thirty-seven, Toru Watanabe hears an old Beatles song in a European airport and is carried back to late-1960s Tokyo. As a university student, he reunites with Naoko, the girlfriend of his deceased best friend Kizuki, and their shared grief develops into an intimate relationship. Naoko’s fragile mental health eventually takes her away to a rest center, leaving Watanabe suspended between devotion, loneliness, and uncertainty. His growing attraction to the lively, determined Midori offers a radically different vision of love and engagement with the world, but he cannot easily release the past. Told through memory, the novel follows a young man trying to understand sex, death, and responsibility when desire cannot rescue the people he loves from their private suffering.
