Alice steps through a mirror into a world where ordinary logic runs backward and social rules become elaborate nonsense. The landscape resembles a giant chessboard, and her progress from square to square brings a succession of self-contained encounters with the Red and White Queens, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, Humpty Dumpty, and the kindly White Knight. Poems, riddles, arguments, and shifting definitions repeatedly turn language against itself, leaving Alice to challenge characters who insist that absurd conventions are perfectly reasonable. Rather than following a conventional adventure plot, the novel uses her journey through the looking-glass to test identity, authority, and the unstable relationship between words and meaning.
