Description

Set in sixteenth-century England, Mark Twain’s historical novel follows nine-year-old Edward VI and his look-alike, Tom Canty, a poor London boy abused by his family. After meeting outside Westminster, the boys exchange clothes as a temporary experiment, but appearances quickly trap them in each other’s lives. Edward is separated from the palace, while Tom is mistaken for the prince and struggles to navigate court customs. Protected by Miles Hendon, who doubts his royal identity, Edward experiences poverty, harsh class divisions, and punitive laws firsthand. These experiences lead him to resolve to rule with greater mercy. Through the boys’ parallel ordeals, the novel explores identity and social rank while criticizing inequality and the tendency to judge people by appearances.
