About Lewis Carroll
Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832–1898), an English author, mathematician, photographer, and Anglican deacon. He spent most of his life at Christ Church, Oxford, as a scholar and teacher, and his work in mathematics and logic informed the carefully structured nonsense of his writing. In Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, a practical child confronts worlds governed by puns, reversals, arbitrary rules, and arguments that test language and authority. His poems “Jabberwocky” and The Hunting of the Snark use invented words and parodies of orderly reasoning to similar effect. Throughout his work, fantasy and comedy provide ways to examine identity, education, and the uncertain relation between words and meaning.
