In modern Seoul, Yeong-hye, a graphic artist and homemaker, abruptly rejects animal products after dreams saturated with slaughter. Her refusal appears simple to her husband, yet it disrupts the obedience her family and society expect from her. The novel never grants Yeong-hye a sustained viewpoint of her own; instead, three sections move through her husband, brother-in-law, and sister, each interpreting her transformation through private desires, shame, resentment, or concern. As others try to control, exploit, diagnose, or understand her body, Yeong-hye withdraws further from ordinary human life. Spare and unsettling, the novel uses one woman’s radical refusal to examine violence, innocence, sanity, empathy, and the body as a final refuge from social demands.
