Gregor Samsa, a traveling salesman who supports his parents and sister, wakes one morning transformed into a huge insect. His first worries concern missing work and displeasing his employer, but his unintelligible voice and altered body make ordinary explanation impossible. Horrified, the family confines him to his bedroom, where he learns to crawl, hide, and eat differently while listening to life continue beyond the door. His sister tends to him, yet even her care changes as the household reorganizes its finances and Gregor loses his place within it. Kafka’s deadpan novella turns an impossible event into a claustrophobic study of labor, dependence, shame, and conditional affection, asking how quickly a person can become a burden in the eyes of those who once relied on him.
