Chief Bromden has spent years in an Oregon psychiatric hospital pretending to be deaf and mute while observing how Nurse Ratched controls the ward through routine, humiliation, and fear. The arrival of Randle Patrick McMurphy disrupts that order. Having feigned insanity to escape a prison work farm, McMurphy treats the institution as another authority to outwit, organizing pranks and urging the patients to demand choices of their own. His escalating contests with Ratched awaken confidence in men conditioned to see themselves as powerless, but institutional punishment gives every act of defiance dangerous consequences. Through Bromden’s secretive perspective, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest examines coercion, masculinity, psychiatry, and the unstable boundary between liberation and self-destruction.
