Melinda begins freshman year at Merryweather High as a socially isolated outcast. Her classmates shun her for calling the police to break up an end-of-summer party, unaware that she was sexually assaulted there. As her isolation grows, she withdraws almost entirely from speaking, while the upperclassman who assaulted her remains at school and continues to pose a threat. Art class becomes Melinda’s refuge as she confronts what happened. Told through an ironic teenage voice, Speak challenges the hypocrisy of high school while tracing Melinda’s movement toward self-advocacy. Her changing relationship with art and language gives shape to an experience she has struggled to express.
