Arthur Maxley has left college and withdrawn into a city hotel, where a family allowance permits him to drift through days of isolation and heavy drinking. Beneath his aimlessness lies an unnamed early trauma that has warped his sense of himself and hardened his feelings toward his absent father. When that father arrives in town after years without contact, Arthur agrees to meet him, forcing both men into the proximity he has long avoided. The encounter sends Arthur into a night of alcohol, dancing, and increasingly unstable emotion as memory presses against what he can admit. Compressed and psychologically dark, the novel follows a damaged young man through the narrow space between numbness and revelation, using noir atmosphere to examine paternal absence and the afterlife of childhood pain.
